What's on your plate? Today's buzzword - Afternoon Snack. An afternoon snack should give you a pick me up and bridge the gap of hunger before your next meal. There are plenty of healthy options to choose from. Here's a peak on my plate today. Sliced cucumber with cajun seasoning. This is a quick snack that you can throw in your lunch bag before you head out the door. Just slice a cucumber into quarter sized pieces, sprinkle a little bit of cajun seasoning and you've got a great healthy snack. One regular sized cucumber is about 35 calories. So, you won't be packing on the calories, but the high water content of cucumbers will help to keep you cool and hydrated in the summer heat. Also, experiement with different seasoning to take your palet on an adventure. Just remember to use the low-sodium varieties of your choosing. Cucumbers are cleansing. The water in the vegetable helps to act as a diurectic. They are also high in fiber. Fiber is essential to weight loss. Fiber helps to move waste through the digestive tract and aids in elimination. Cucumbers are also alkalinizing. They help to restore the proper pH level to the bloodstream. This is key as a highly acidic environment in the body leads to weight gain and a host of other potential conditions. Cucumbers are a good stable to keep around. Especially when losing weight. You can eat them raw, in a salad, or place a few slices in your water for a yummy, super hydrating treat. Keep them on hand, and discover the possibilities during your weight loss journey. Always Be Prepared. I had an appointment at 10am this morning. Since my meeting took place in a crowded downtown area where you have to fight for a parking space or pay outrageous fees for parking in a garage, I decided to take the subway to my appointment. There are a few items that I always keep in my bag, walking shoes, a power bar in case I get hungry before my next meal and my gps that tells me how to get to my next destination whether I am walking, driving or on the subway. After my appointment, I decided I would reward myself for performing well at the appointment. My reward was some additional activity for the day. The sun, was shining, the weather was nice and I was ready to walk home instead of taking the subway. So, I put on my walking shoes, nibble on my power for a power boost, calculated my route on the GPS and started moving. I really enjoyed the walk as I purposely walked through neighborhoods that I had only driven through before. This time, I was able to really look at some of the houses I had been admiring, enjoy some of the pretty sculptures, artwork and architecture along the way, get in a little extra Vitamin D by getting some sun and enjoy the brisk, power walk home. I remember chuckling as I was walking over a bridge of a major highway. As I looked over the bridge, traffic was backed up on the exit that I would have probably taken to get home. I chuckled because as traffic was at a standstill, on the exit ramp, I was joyfully walking and getting closer to my destination faster than those on that exit ramp. On your weight loss and wellness journey, always be prepared. Take extra healthy snacks when you travel so that you won't be tempted with unhealthy options. Also, take or wear comfortable shoes when taking public transportation. Take advantage of opportunities to walk instead of drive to your destination whenever possible. This will help your psyche and help you burns some extra calories as you power walk. Remember, this extra activity must count, so no leisurely strolls allowed, step it up a notch and make the walk really count by increasing your calorie burn with a faster pace. I appreciate driving, however, I have developed a new appreciation for walking in my city. I am seeing parts of the city that I haven't seen before. And, it amazes me how far away places seen when you have to deal with traffic. Yet when walking, you are able to keep moving at a pace that gets you to your destination in your expected time frame. It was to take me 44 minutes to walk home according to the GPS, yet my power pace got me there in 38 minutes! Walking does a body good! Does your figure resemble a taut, tight body that is nourished with clean eating? Or does your bum look like a hamburger bun? I used to have a burger booty and decided to trade it in for a derriere that more resembled cantaloupes. :-) Cantaloupes & Honey Dew melons are high in water content and natural sugars that give the body natural energy. Cantaloupes are high in vitamin C which is an antioxidant. Antioxidants are key to minimizing the free radicals that contribute to disease and aging. Vitamin A - helps with healthy eyesight Folate - which may help to prevent heart attacks Cantaloupe rates "medium" on the glycemic index so it is less likely to spike blood sugar levels. These melons provide a good way to break your fast and start your day. Be sure to eat melons on an empty stomach or prior to your meal. This practice helps to minimize any gastro-intestinal distress. So, therefore you won't be musical... :-) Wow! I'm 5 months into my 2nd year of maintaining a 65 lb weight loss. Making a decision to commit to my own rescue in 2010 was a life changing decision for the better. As Summer is a time of fun and frolic, you may be needing some encouragement for your weight loss journey. Or, you may have totally missed your goal and are looking to restart for a do-over. It's been a while since I've done a photo recap of the journey, so I thought that since we are well into a new season of Summer, this would be a great time to reflect on where I started. I hope that this motivates you to stand strong in your journey. The beginning - January 23, 2010 Being able to lose my first 30 lbs in 5 weeks was the catalyst that I needed to really be involved in my own rescue. Today, my life changing transformation keeps me motivated to help others in the struggle with their weight. When you begin with the end in mind and have someone coach you through the journey, your results are amazing! |
