A steamer allows you to prepare several meals or mini meals that will last a few days. For instance, on the bottom row in this picture is steamed rice that will yield 5 cups of brown rice. On the top row is yellow squash, zucchini, onions and string beans which yields about 3-4 servings. You can also steam your meats in the bottom row. There is a wonderful cheat sheet on the side of the steamer that tells you how long to steam popular foods. You can prep a meal in the steamer bowls in the evening. In the morning, before you hit the shower, plug in the steamer and let her rip. By the time you finish getting dressed, your food will be done. This also works well when you get in late from the office or gym and want to prepare a quick, light meal.
